History

The national Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) was founded in 1975 to celebrate and preserve Carroll Shelby’s world-championship cars. In the late 1970s, regional groups formed across the country, including one co-founded by San Diego local J Bittle while he was in college.

In 1982, J teamed up with SAAC National Rep Craig Conley to establish the Shelby-Ford Motor Sport Club of San Diego, organizing cruises, rallies, road events, and even renting Carlsbad Raceway for club drag races. Leadership later passed to Roland Eddy, helping the club grow with newsletters, logos, and regular meetings.

By 2000, under Craig Wright, the club became the incorporated SoCal SAAC, formalizing bylaws, dues, board meetings, and a website. Members actively participated in cruises, shows, and annual volunteer work at the Coronado Speed Festival.

In 2012, President Steve Ulmer modernized the club—updating bylaws, reestablishing SAAC National affiliation, and securing insurance. The club continued hosting spirited drives, shop tours, museum visits, and track events.

Major milestones included the 50th Anniversary of the Cobra in 2012 and the 50th Anniversary of the Mustang in 2014, both celebrated by members at unforgettable national events.

Today, SoCal SAAC continues its mission of preserving Shelby heritage through community, events, and shared passion for performance cars.
